Our client is a leading e-commerce retailer specializing in home décor products, offering a wide range of items with multiple product options and variants. With a growing customer base and thousands of products in their catalog, they needed a scalable, efficient platform that would enhance their store’s performance and simplify product management.

The Challenge

The client’s existing website was built on WordPress with WooCommerce. As their catalog expanded into thousands of products across numerous collections, each product featuring multiple product options, the existing setup began to show limitations in performance and ease of management.

Key challenges included:

  • Migrating thousands of products and collections with intricate product variants
  • Managing data formats that were not directly compatible with Shopify
  • The complexity of custom product options that couldn’t be transferred through automated scripts alone
  • Ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining SEO structures post-migration

The Solution

At Unifying Dots, we approached this large-scale migration with a carefully structured strategy.

Key Steps We Followed:

1. Data Audit and Strategy:
We conducted a detailed assessment of the existing WooCommerce product data, reviewing product structures, variant complexities, and collections to design the right approach for data mapping and migration.

2. Migration Using Matrixify:
Considering the scale and complexity, we leveraged the Matrixify (formerly Excelify) app, which allowed us to:

  • Export thousands of products efficiently
  • Reformat and structure the data to match Shopify’s requirements
  • Import large datasets into Shopify while preserving product relationships and collections

3. Manual Configuration for Custom Product Options:
Certain product options required manual intervention. We created custom product options directly in Shopify to ensure that the final product pages provided the same flexibility and functionality as before.

4. Thorough Quality Testing:
We performed multiple quality assurance cycles to verify:

  • Accurate product and variant migration
  • Correct assignment of collections
  • Integrity of product images and metadata
  • Seamless functionality of all custom product options on the live store

5. SEO and URL (301) Redirection:
To preserve existing search engine rankings, we mapped old URLs and set up proper 301 redirects, while ensuring all metadata and alt tags were transferred accurately.

The Results

The result was a successful, disruption-free migration from WordPress to Shopify, giving the client:

  • A high-performance, scalable Shopify store
  • An easily manageable product catalog with thousands of products
  • Enhanced customer experience with clean, intuitive product pages and custom options
  • Maintained search engine visibility through careful SEO migration

Client Testimonial

The team is very knowledgeable of WordPress and Shopify. They successfully migrated all our products from WooCommerce to Shopify with added instructions for new variations, then added 301 redirects for all products and pages. They were very responsive and a great in communication. We would be happy to work with them again.
